Count me among those that were delighted to hear Arcade Fire playing during a commercial break of the Super Bowl but did the NFL use their song without permission? Paste and Pitchfork of course jump in. The Daily Swarm is quick to remind us that a lawsuit is unlikely to be successful. If I was in their shoes, I'm not sure I would even be upset about the situation. The Long Tail, people! Spread the word. glc

From the tornado-ravaged South: eleven-month-old Kyson Stowell was found amid the wreckage after being thrown 100 yards from his destroyed house. Tragically, his mother did not survive the storm. This is further proof of the fact that, as my dad likes to say, babies bounce (that is to say, they're more resilient than we give them credit for). And here's more proof: baby dropped from third story window in a fire. tjc

Giving credit were credit is due: I'm not a NASCAR fan, but this story from ESPN the Magazine is very cool.

At 1 o'clock on a bright October afternoon, I'm standing in a convenience store parking lot five miles east of Martinsville, Va. In the 24 hours before the green flag drops on the Subway 500, I need to find a ride to the speedway and a $75 ticket to the sold-out race. Problem is, all I have on me is $20, a cell phone and a camcorder.
Without ruining the story, let's just say that I'm not sure I would expect the kind of hospitality he was offered from any other sport's fans. These NASCAR followers are like The Dukes of Hazzard on Shakedown Street. tjc

Chad Johnson, or Ocho A**hole, is demanding a trade. He shunned the media at the Pro Bowl (and faces a fine for doing so) save a short interview with Jamie Dukes of the NFL Network. He said in the interview:

I haven't done it perfect, but consistently at a high level. I get out of line at times, but what great one doesn't? What great one doesn't get emotional? Find me a great one who hasn't done it like that and I'll be quiet.
Okay, Chad, let's try it. There are many "great ones" I could name who aren't self-absorbed, temperamental, narcissistic, loud-mouthed children like yourself. Here's an actual "great one," maybe the greatest one - Jerry Rice - but I can't allow you to place yourself in his stratosphere. So here' a "great one" in your neighborhood - Andre Reed. How about Art Monk, Steve Largent, and Tim Brown. Maybe that's giving you too much credit; here's some from your era: Marvin Harrison, Hines Ward, and Torry Holt. How about another Johnson - Andre Johnson - or, just to hammer it home, how about a teammate of yours - T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Is that enough, Chad? Will you shut you pie-hole now? Doubt it. tjc
