slackerliner

CAREFUL

If you've spent time in a park recently you may have come across some people tight-rope walking between two trees. The practice is called slacklining and if you haven't tried, it's as hard as it looks. They even have their own online community where you can find information on the history, current competitions, and adventure tails. In conjunction with that, Jason Magness has now created a whole new slackline discipline: Slackline yoga. I take yoga. It is one of the hardest things I've ever done. I can't imagine how difficult it is to pull off the modified Warrior I pose let alone the one handed side crow pose he manages to do at the beginning of the accompanying video. Amazing! glc

#4. Because as China builds out its infrastructure, it can set a good or a bad example to developing economies struggling to deal with fragile environments.

With all of the buzz surrounding HBO's miniseries John Adams, I thought that some of his more famous quotes may be worth taking a look at. Enjoy. jmj

I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.

Time.com has conducted their first annual blog index. Their Top 25 is a veritable who's who in the blog world and an amazing place to start if you are new to the blog universe. They even have what they consider to be the most over-rated blogs. Though their presentation and insistence on each site having their own Time.com page without a root page is frustrating and over the top. glc

John Biles, a computer scientist at Rochester University, used the Fibonacci Sequence to create a piece of music that was played by a Harp Vox. The visual layout of the music is fractal in nature which is also bad ass. It's not the most earth shattering piece of music you will ever hear, but it is interesting. Listen. glc

For those who want to hear something a little more recognizable check out the 5.2 second long 'Amen Break'. Perhaps the most used and sampled drum break in the history of modern music. It follows the Golden Ratio to a T. It, too, is fractal in nature. Double bad-ass! Listen. (via source dorks) glc

And for those not exactly sure what the Fibonacci Sequence is, you can read all about it on Wikipedia. Or just go buy Mario Livio's book entitled 'The Golden Ratio'.

The Pythagorean worldview... was based on an extreme admiration for the arithmos -- the intrinsic properties of whole numbers or their ratios -- and their presumed role in the cosmos. The realization that there exist numbers, like the Golden Ratio, that go on forever without displaying any repetition or pattern caused a true philosophical crisis.

I can hear Fibonacci now debating with Pythagoras in the afterlife: "Right triangles are for suckers Py, spirals man, spirals are where it's at, man. Look at the cosmos man, it's all spirals!" Yes, I picture Fibonacci talking as if he was Slater from Dazed and Confused. Why? I don't know. But it's a good excuse to enjoy the theatrical trailer. glc

Another ESPN Mag article I couldn't help but link to. Rasheed Wallace, future coach? Even with the baggae of technical fouls I have never heard anyone say they wouldn't want 'Sheed on their home town team. When the 76'ers got Chris Webber years ago I wished it was 'Sheed instead. I know I'm not alone either. Plus the article clues you in on a more personal side of Wallace that you may not know and that you may respect if all the technical fouls cloud your judgement. glc
