Today's post is both connected and disconnected. A collection of independent thoughts I have been thinking that coincidentally or perhaps not, seem to be interconnected and not so independent.

The idea of an assassination attempt on Senator Obama is a fear many of his supporters have held for a long time now. But as much as I personally thought it was a sincere possibility I'm not sure I ever truly grasped the reality of it until recent news out of Denver. It is that recent news concerning a plot to do just that in Denver during the Democratic National Convention that has brought those fears to a shocking reality. I have never in my adult years witnessed an assassination attempt let alone a successful one on my home soil of a presidential candidate or existing president. It is a sobering thought and it is an event I hope I never have to experience in my life time. It has left me wondering how a nation would overcome such an event, regardless of which party an individual would fall in line with.

Back to School

| | Comments (0)

Across America, Moms and Dads are spending freely to make sure that their children are prepared for the upcoming school year. Most of the crap that is purchased in unnecessary and arbitrary, but looking cool is much more important than learning, I'm sure.

As a teacher, this also means that it is back to work for me. I always get random emails and phone calls all week about what my students will be needing for the year. My advice to parents everywhere: if you're going to purchase your child mechanical pencils, please choose wisely.

This piece was written in the Spring of 2006. Enjoy.

Videos Redux

I know I know. I can at times go a little over board with the Radiohead business. But the video for All I Need is strikingly beautiful. The Dichotomy. The momentary similarities of life awakening in the morning that transitions into a world very different then the one we experience growing up. Yet, as the conclusion so clearly drives home, that far away world has a much greater influence on our day to day lives then we care to consciously acknowledge. A stunning video.

The Olympics. How can you not get excited for the Olympics? I'm particularly a Winter Olympics fan more so then the Summer Olympics but I like Gummy Bears just a bit more then Sour Patch Kids too That doesn't mean I don't love Sour Patch Kids. Mmm... candy. Ok ok, I digress, back to business, The Olympics. I love the Olympics. I've even halted my ongoing TV ban since March and hooked up a pair of rabbit ears so I could enjoy the nightly NBC telecasts. Since that time, I've learned a few things.

Now that the Michael Phelps saga is over, we can turn our attention to the other athletes and events that make the Olympics worth watching.
