Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada is in serious danger. The park, consisting mainly of glaciers, rock and polar sea ice, is experiencing flash flooding due to a combination of melting permafrost and erosion caused by record high temperatures. The island itself has shrunk by 50% over the last 50 years. Ironically, Auyuittuq is Inuktitut for 'The Land that Never Melts.' jmj

Last month, PBS announced that it will stop transmitting Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood for its daily syndicated lineup beginning in September, instead showing only one episode per weekend. Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama is calling for the creation of a new Cabinet-level position, Chief Technology Officer. Responsibilities of this new position would include making sure that the federal government imports the best technology tools from the private sector, and making sure government is more transparent, providing an outreach to the public.

GOP Presidential candidate John McCain, on the other hand, has proposed a program to provide tax and financial benefits for companies that provide broadband services to low-income and rural users. He plans on hiring more people with technology experience throughout the government who can envision technology solutions for education, health care, homeland security and other issues instead.
