Float Like a Bee, Sting Like a Butterfly

After a much parley and anticipation, the first Presidential Debate that almost didn't happen took place this past Friday night at the University of Mississippi. Moderator Jim Lehrer led the candidates through a series of lead questions that involved foreign policy, the economy, and national security. No haymakers were thrown; instead, the two candidates spent the first round dancing around the ring feeling each other out with a lot of 'he said/she said' nonsense.

A few things stuck out for me, though.

1. Politicians don't lie. They twist the truth to meet their needs, and they do it a lot.

2. John McCain performed much more efficiently than I thought he would.

3. Remember all of the hullabaloo about Barack Obama not wearing a U.S. flag pin on his lapel? Remember all of backlash he received? Well, he wore one on Friday evening, and John McCain did not. I haven't heard one word about it.

4. John McCain hates Barack Obama. He couldn't even look at him.

5. Moderator Jim Lehrer did his best to get the candidates to have dialogue with each other. And as soon as they began to, he would stop them and move on to the next lead question. That was annoying. He did, however, do a pretty nice job of rephrasing questions to get some answers.

6. The war in Iraq started in 2003, not 2007.

7. Both candidates wear bracelets for fallen soldiers. McCain unveiled his to avoid answering a question, and then Barack countered McCain with a bracelet of his own. It seems that these bracelets are fueling the candidate's stances of the war in Iraq.

8. John McCain has a pen. It's an old pen, but a pen nonetheless, and he's going to veto every single spending bill that comes across his desk.

9. Both candidates avoided discussing specific about the effect of the $700 billion buyout will have on their Presidencies as much as they possibly could.

10. It's important to know the difference between a strategy and a tactic. And in case you were wondering, tactics are methods for employing a strategy.

Round 2 takes place on Tuesday, October 7th at Belmont University, Nashville, TN.
