2001 spacesuit

In memoriam to the recently departed Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, the Wired Blog posted the spot-on and long-debated sync of "Echoes" and 2001: A Space Odyssey in three YouTubed parts. It also is in dedication to 2001 author Arthur C. Clarke (of the latter-mentioned Clarke's three laws) who died in March. tjc

I may have posted this here before but if you were ever wondering about the meaning behind the movie itself, this may help. glc

From Slate: How did they hack Palin's e-mail? Also they have a link to Gawker webshots, but I think the Wikileaks page was shut down, not sure. Crazy stuff going on here. tjc

You rarely hear about it, but there is a national epidemic that has spread among more than 18 million Americans. tjc

Another unmissable Tedster on the scientific difference between Democrats and Republicans. To sum it up: open- vs. closed-minded. He says to bridge the gap one must be Buddhist (not really, but kind of). Truly, he says we need each other in order to progress without collapsing. But please watch the video, I'm not at all doing it justice. tjc

Via kottke: Apparently, when it comes to bedsheets, the quality increases minimally after it hits 300. The price doesn't, however. Seeing this makes me a happy, wealthier man. jmj

A wiki-list of wide-ranging laws named after someone. Some of note: tjc

Macfarlane's law

You can talk faster than you can type, but you can read faster than you can listen.

Peckham's law

Beauty times brains equals a constant.

Skitt's law (a corollary of Murphy's law)

Any post correcting an error in another post will contain at least one error itself.

-or-

The likelihood of an error in a post is directly proportional to the embarrassment it will cause the poster.

Poe's law

Without a blatant display of humor, it is impossible to tell the difference between religious fundamentalism and a parody thereof.

Clarke's three laws

First law: When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.

Second law: The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.

Third law: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Ted Leo

After complaining in the past about the lack of new protest music (or something of the like), Good Magazine says I should be listening to Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I guess I'll give them a go, unless anyone thinks I'll be wasting my time (let me know). tjc

I saw Ted Leo open up for Pearl Jam this summer. He rocks. jmj

How have I not linked to this yet? An HD video of suited, high-speed skateboarding, via Kottke. Blows my mind, this ride. tjc
