Starting Point

McCainFor the first time in this election season, I like the words coming out of McCain's mouth. Why? They closely resemble Obama's (which isn't metioned in this New Yorker column). The Republican frontrunner, in an attempt to separate himself from Bush the Younger, calls his opponent a "compatriot." That means that being a Democrat, criticizing the system, wanting to get troops out of Iraq, and being willing to talk to our enemies no longer means not being a patriot. A step in the right direction. Unfortunately the author takes one step to far when he pipedreams of a McCain-Obama / Obama-McCain sharing of the VP. He said the two should offer each other second-in-line. Never. Going. To. Happen. (Proof later.)

Missing that which isn’t there

There is an old saying that goes something along the lines of ‘you don’t know what you've got until it’s gone.’ The intended point of that statement is to imply that you will miss someone or something much more then you realize when they or it are gone. Though I guess it could work both ways and you could miss something less then you imagined. As millions can attest both views are probably true. Loved ones, pets, co-workers who have quit or been let go, or possibly even transferred to a different department all can elicit significant emotional feelings of loss. Moving out of a house or an apartment, selling a car or changing cities can also cause real emotional changes. What I’ve discovered recently is that this feeling of loss also bridges the gap into our day to day activities.

This is the first in what has been an ongoing - now named - series of articles about tangents shooting from a central theme. So now I'll just be forewarning you of the tangential takes before you start reading and ask yourself, "What is his point?" Well, the answer is, "I have many." So from now on, when I can't decide on one point, you'll know.
