13 year-old Jordan Romero of Big Bear, California became the youngest person to scale the world's tallest peak this past weekend when he reached the top of Mount Everest. His is now just one peak short of his goal to climb the tallest mountains on each of the seven continents, with only Mt. Vinson in Antarctica remaining. Jordan plans on scaling Mt. Vinson this winter, which will make him the youngest person to climb the tallest peaks on all seven continents. The current record is 17 years-old.

Jordan's quest began when he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro at the age of 9. That's awesome.

I've always enjoyed the work of Frank Deford. Whether it be on NPR, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel or in Sports Illustrated, he has always been equally compelling and entertaining.

His piece in the March 29th issue of Sports Illustrated, Confessions of a Sportswriter, however, takes the cake. It is an absolute masterpiece.

The Sporting News released their list this past Wednesday of the the 50 greatest coaches of all time.

Now, I'm sure that there are many coaches who could possibly be on this list are are not, and I know I am biased towards NCAA wrestling. But no Dan Gable? C'mon!

21 years are the head coach at the University of Iowa. 21 Big Ten titles, 15 National Championships.

Enough said.

Just because wrestling isn't a major sport doesn't mean it doesn't deserve recognition.

I've seen the Mets play numerous times this year, and at times, they look like a Little League team. A group Long Island baseball veterans agree, and are producing a video on the fundamentals of baseball to help their favorite team.

Hilarious! [thx, Tony]

Utley's Corner

| Comments (0)

The Phillies/Mets rivalry has been renewed over the past couple of years with members of each team proclaiming themselves to be "the team to beat." To add to this, New York Mets announcer Gary Cohen of SNY dubbed the right field corner "Utley's Corner" this past weekend when the the Yankees' Brett Gardner hit a homerun to right field.

Earlier this month, Phillies second baseman Chase Utley went 5-14 in a series against the Mets with 3 homeruns to the oddly-shaped right field corner.

It's a little unorthodox to name part of the field after your main rival's star player, but I like it. [via crashburnalley]

The Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins and St. Louis Cardinals all recently switched to a straight away camera angle to show pitchers pitching to batters. Every other team uses the slightly off-centered angle we are accustomed to seeing during a normal baseball broadcast. It's a fascinating debate.
