Carrying Herself With Grace

On October 10, Brooke, her father and I went to see Grace Potter & the Nocturnals at the Theater of Living Arts in Philadelphia. It was the second time Brooke and I have seen Grace and her band perform and the first for Steve. It sounds cliché, but her recordings, as good as they are, don't even compare to the live performances. Grace Potter & the Nocturnals are on my short list of bands that I will see when they come to town no matter what is going on. If the video below isn't proof of that, then I don't know what is. And for a $17 price tag, you most certainly get your money's worth.

After the show, Steve, mentioned to Brooke and I that he has worked with some of the same musicians and producers that Grace Potter has. Why this has never come up in conversation is beyond me. Not only are Brooke and Steve in the same band, but they cover a few of Grace's songs! The reason behind this little secret of Steve's quickly became irrelevant and our mission obvious: we had to meet her.

It was amazing how easy is actually was. We hung around until we were told to leave by the establishment's security, and then explained our situation. The surprisingly helpful gentleman told us to hang around and that he would see what he could do. He didn't do much, but at the very least, he bought us some time. From there, Steve asked one of Grace's roadies who immediately recognized a few of the names. We were in.

brookestevegraceAfter about 20 minutes, Grace came out from backstage flashing that charming smile that makes her so likable when she's on stage. She was very cordial and courteous, thanking us for sticking around as if it was her dying to meet us. After about what seemed like a half of an hour of an engaging conversation, Brooke whipped out her iPhone. It was picture time.

I first took a picture of Brooke and Grace, and her father hopped in for a photo as well. I handed Brooke back her phone, and then it happened.

Brooke: "Okay, Joseph, I know how much you love Grace. Get over here and smile."

I could have killed her. Frozen with embarrassment, my eyes were bulging out of my head attempting to shoot daggers at Brooke. Grace made here way towards me for the photo since I pretty much didn't move.

Grace: "Hey! You're wearing one of my t-shirts!"

Me: "Holy hell, I am officially the biggest nerd on the planet."

Grace: "No way man; it's cool! That's an old shirt. I don't even think we sell it anymore."

Yeah, I'm that guy. I'm not sure if Grace saying that makes me cool or even more of a nerd, but I'll take it.

The night ended with hugs and kisses (not kidding) and we were on our merry way. It was exciting to meet one of my my favorite artists, and even more so for Brooke. It's not everyday that you get to hold a conversation with a person that you aspire to be like. And for good reason, too. Not only is Grace Potter and incredible songwriter and performer, from what I could gather in the short time that we spent with her, the name Grace is very fitting.

Thanks for making our night, Grace. You've just been added to the official fanboy list.
